Why Was Wajima-nuri Chosen for Analysis?
The Background
Wajima-nuri, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan, is highly regarded worldwide for its exceptional beauty and durability.
With its refined texture and rich, lustrous colors, Wajima-nuri is a vessel that appeals to the five senses and continues to be cherished as a companion throughout the years.
The techniques behind Wajima-nuri have been refined and handed down over generations.
Its production process requires advanced skills, deep knowledge, and years of experience.
However, in recent years, the aging of artisans and the declining interest of younger generations in the lacquerware industry have made the transmission of these techniques a growing challenge.
In this project likely the first of its kind in the world.
We analyzed a Wajima-nuri bowl using a 3D laser scanning device and a micro-focus X-ray CT scanner to scientifically uncover the secret behind the lacquer’s ability to maintain its deep luster and durability for over a century, despite being made from natural materials.
Our aim is to explore new approaches that will help younger generations appreciate the appeal of Wajima-nuri, while also clearly conveying its technical superiority to international buyers and consumers through scientific data and analytical findings.
